Macon Central Services Building Demolished, Making Way for River Project

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The sound of sledge hammers and crumbling bricks roared through the air in downtown Macon Thursday afternoon.

The city’s former central services building located on Riverside Drive was torn down. The building is the last structure on a 14-acre piece of land that’s set to be the location for the “Renaissance on the River” project.

Macon Mayor Reichert spoke about the land’s prime location near the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, and close distance to downtown. He said that makes it the perfect spot for a project like the ‘Renaissance’ which will bring commercial and residential development to the area.

The mayor and other city leaders were excited to see the demolition. It’s one of several old buildings and abandoned homes that have been demolished under the mayor’s administration.

Chair of the Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority, Chris Sheridan, says it’s an exciting day for the revitalization of the downtown area.

“Being in a contracting business myself I love seeing this kind of stuff it’s a lot of fun so uh, but I’m really excited that now we have a product to sell, and before now we really didn’t have one that was ready to sell,” said Sheridan.

Sheridan says there’s already a developer interested in the project.
