Macon-Bibb residents can aid and get paid in debris clean-up

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County still has an estimated 35,000 cubic yards to go in cleaning up left over debris from Hurricane Irma.

“I was actually like my neighborhood–it had a lot of debris in it,” said resident Jalisa Green.

The storm may be long gone but people around town are still waiting on the mess it left behind to follow suit.

“There’s different debris–c&d, vegetative, depending on which truck is picking it up, they pick it up at different times,” said Debris Tech operations manager Tyler Williamson.

The county–now closing in on contractors–has some opportunities for residents to help with clean up as well as earn some extra cash.

“I feel like it’s something kind of like giving back a little bit,” said Green. “Not only will we be able to get paid for it, but I think it’s a good amount of compensation,” she added.

For $12 an hour, people interested can work with Debris Tech–the company in charge of managing debris pick up.

“They’ll be watching them load, making sure they don’t mix piles, once they get done loading they’ll document it, pull up the GPS coordinates to show us where the debris came from,” said Williamson.

He says hiring locally is company policy.

“We like to hire locals. They’re the ones that have been affected by the storm or disaster so, we try to make it work and help out as much as we can.”

People who attended the training Sunday will start bright and early Monday, and they won’t stop until every last branch is in a bin.
