Macon-Bibb remedies ongoing battle against illegal dumping with ‘SeeClickFix’

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Illegal dumping has been a problem the county has been dealing with for years according to Macon-Bibb County Officials. But there’s a way you can help.

They want to remind residents what to do if you see an unauthorized dump site.

“It’s just a blight in our community and no one should have to live in that kind of environment,” said Macon Bibb County’s Public Affairs Director Chris Floore.

Used mattresses, old TV’s and even toilet seats–those are some of the items you’ll find lining streets around town.

“The Large piles that you see dumping off on the side of the road, the big piles of tires,” Floore told 41NBC.

Illegal dumping is a never-ending battle for Macon-Bibb County’s Solid Waste Department.

“Some areas you go through there is trash but it shows the attitude,” said resident Charles Lee Scott.

Residents who want to see their city streets clean are also in the fight.

“What it should do is spark the neighbors to care and to not let that happen. If neighbors would speak up or stand out then that wouldn’t happen,” said Scott.

Floore says there’s a way residents can stop it.

“Illegal dumps can be reported through our ‘SeeClickFix’ app. It’s either online at maconbibb.us/seeclickfix or through the free mobile application for iPhone or android users. It’s a free download,” he explained.

Once you report a dump site, the app or website will send an instant notification to the county’s solid waste department.

“When you submit your request for that service, you get an email saying we’ve accepted it, you get an email saying we’ve acknowledged it and once that issue is resolved, you get an email that says we’ve resolved and closed your issue,” he continued.

So, helping get the city’s streets a little closer to clean is only a click away. SeeClickFix is pretty simple to use.

You can upload a photo of the dump site while using the app and the program can grab the exact coordinates of the dump site using GPS.

In 2015 alone, Macon-Bibb County had over 15,000 requests come in through its ‘SeeClickFix’ database. Macon-Bibb offers 80 services using the program.

Floore says the county landfill also allows one free dump of up to 500 pounds of waste per month for people needing the service.
