MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon-Bibb County residents have an opportunity tonight to voice their opinions on the future of local government structure.

Elected officials and community organizers are gathering for an East Macon Town Hall, where discussions will center on a proposed charter amendment that could extend mayoral term limits. Earlier this month, the Macon-Bibb County Commission voted 6-3 in favor of allowing Mayor Lester Miller and future mayors to seek a third term. The final decision now rests with Macon’s state senators and representatives.

Among the dissenting votes was District 3 Commissioner Stanley Stewart, who acknowledged Miller’s leadership but argued that three terms is excessive. Stewart told 41NBC News that the town hall will give residents a chance to speak directly with lawmakers about term limits and other pressing issues in Macon-Bibb County.

“We want to make sure that state legislators know the pulse of the people and vice versa,” Stewart said. “We want to make sure that state legislators know where citizens stand on the matter. But, once that’s done, we want to make sure that the [state] representatives and [state senators]… know that the people have a voice on this matter, and the people will hold them accountable if they vote contradictory to that voice.”

The town hall begins at 6 p.m. at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, located at 2789 Millerfield Road.
