MACON, Georgia (41NBC/ WMGT) – Macon-Bibb Mayor Lester Miller is considering a run for governor in 2026. He floated the idea around on Facebook earlier this month by asking people what they think.

We spoke with the mayor on Wednesday about his potential run. He told 41NBC he’s considering putting his name in the hat but that he expects Macon to see continued growth and lower taxes over the next four years.

“I’m being encouraged by both Republicans and Democrats, which is very unique for someone running for public office,” he said. “But we’re excited about what the possibilities may bring. But right now my primary focus is to make sure I finish the job I started right here in Macon.”

The next gubernatorial election is scheduled for November 5, 2026. The current governor, Brian Kemp, a Republican, was re-elected in 2022 after defeating Democrat Stacey Abrams. Kemp has reached the term limit for Georgia governors, which is set at two consecutive four-year terms.

Miller, who’s currently serving his first four-year term, defeated challenger Shekita Maxwell in May to earn a second term. Macon-Bibb’s mayoral term limits also allow for two consecutive four-year terms.
