Lifeguard shortage could impact pools in Macon-Bibb this summer

Officials say dozens of positions are still being filled as the county prepares for pool season.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Summer break is just weeks away for several Bibb County residents, but their swim time may be cut short due to the lack of lifeguards in Macon-Bibb County. Bibb County Recreation Director Robert Walker says the need for lifeguards is crucial in Bibb County. 

“The decline and the need for lifeguards is we typically hire college students and high school students,” Walker said. “And we have to understand once they’ve completed both, they go to college or into their career, so it’s a revolving door. We have a set in and then a set out.”

Now that summer is getting closer, Walker says they’ve had an increase in people filling out applications to become a lifeguard.  

“Before it was kind of hard getting lifeguards,” he said. “Now, since Covid has ended, we are seeing a trend up on getting lifeguards. We normally have 33 positions. Today, right now, we have offered 22 positions, so we are moving fast on getting those people on board and getting them certified to be lifeguards this year.”

Walker says he understands the need for more pay, and ensures all lifeguards will get proper pay.  

“I am familiar with a recent increase in the salary for lifeguards in Warner Robins,” he said. “But I would like to say that based on other surrounding counties, outside of Warner Robins, we are definitely in the competitive group.”

He believes getting more lifeguards will ensure the safety of all visitors. 

“We have public pools, and it’s our duty to ensure our visitors are safe while they’re there,” he said. “And in order to be able to do that, we have to have certified lifeguards. So, in order to have an enjoyable swimming experience at a Macon-Bibb County pool, we need lifeguards. So, we ask for them to come get their certification and help, so we can have an enjoyable summer, and open all pools for our locals to be able to visit.”
