Macon-Bibb highlights women as part of Women’s History Month

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County is highlighting women in different departments throughout the government.

It’s part of Women’s History Month.

“You can do anything. Just don’t put a limit on yourself,” Judge Verda Colvin said in an effort to inspire other young women.

The sky is the limit.

At least Rachel Gambill says she thinks so. She’s a communications specialist with Macon-Bibb County’s public affairs and is shining a light within the county.

“I’d like to highlight the women. So the first one I did, I went up and spoke with Ms. Lucas who was the first female for the Macon-Bibb commission. I talked to her and the idea kind of took off after that,” she said.

It’s taken off into what’s now a growing social media campaign for #womenofMaconBibb. The county is showing different ladies and different departments doing their jobs — and doing them well.

“Well it’s huge and I think it’s more huge than what I realized initially when I was selected by the governor to sit in this post,” Colvin said.

Colvin — the county’s first African-American woman to site on the superior court — says it’s significant to be a torch bearer and a role model.

“When I see children’s eyes light up and say ‘you’re a judge?’ because I look different than most judges that they see, I realize the impact I’m making on their lives and what it says for the community,” Colvin said.

“It doesn’t matter who or what we are. We should do our jobs well and do it with a passion,” Sarah Harris, the county’s first woman probate court judge, said.

She, just a floor down from Colvin in the Bibb County Courthouse, says the goal is to inspire the next generation.

“What I hope is that those women never have to think that there is a ceiling or a barrier, that they can do what they choose to do as long as they do it well,” Harris said.

It’s a mindset Gambill wants to continue sharing.

“When it comes to the things that women bring that really add that extra spark — that’s what we wanted to highlight,” she said.
