Macon-Bibb fountains restored for spring debut

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb’s fountains are getting a makeover for their spring debut.

Stephen Lawson from Macon-Bibb’s Parks and Beautification said the county turns the fountains off every winter. They’re turned back on in the spring. Most fountains will have new lighting in them, but the fountain on the corner of Cherry and Third Streets has been completely restored.

Lawson said the county has previously repainted the Third Street fountain, but this time workers stripped it down to the original metal and restored it to its original state. The pumping system was renewed along with the lights in the trees around the fountain. The repairs cost about $30,000. The money came from donors, New Town Macon, and the county.

“It was a goal of Parks and Beautification last year to get all the fountains running. We were able to accomplish that. The next component was putting lighting back in them,” explained Lawson.

Lawson added most of the damage to the fountains were vandalism. He advised people to throw trash into nearby trash cans instead of the fountains. He said that’s what causes murky green water.

Every fountain in the county will be turned on next Tuesday at 8 p.m. There will be people who helped make this project come to life at every fountain. Lawson invites the community to participate in the celebration.
