Macon-Bibb Firefighter Remembered

Macon and Bibb County remember a fallen firefighter on Thursday.

Michael Jones drowned on Saturday at Lake Tobesofkee as a result of saving the lives of three children, two of which were his own.

Hundreds of friends and local leaders showed their support to Jones’ family Thursday, morning at Macon City Auditorium.

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and Bibb County Chairman Sam Hart were a few local leaders who spoke at Jones’ funeral

Law enforcement agencies from all over Middle Georgia attended Jones’ funeral.  Dozens of former co-workers from Lowe’s Department Store also paid their respects to Jones. One former co-worker spoke about Jones inspiring spirit and how even though he was older than Jones he looked up to him.    

Fire Chief Marvin Riggins talked to the crowd about how Jones was very persistent. Jones applied to the fire department every year since 2007, recently joining the department on May 15th.

Jones is survived by his wife and their three sons.

A memorial fund is set up in his honor. All donations can be dropped off at the Macon Fireman’s Credit Union, or can be mailed to the Macon-Bibb Fire Department at 1191 First Street, Macon, Ga, 31201.
