Macon-Bibb Fire Department Wants You to Practice Fire Safety this Holiday Season

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Local and state fire officials want to help you make sure your holiday plans don’t go up in smoke.

Thursday, Bibb fire officials showed us the proper ways to use kerosene and electric space heaters.

They say as temperatures go down, the number of house fires tends to go up.

Most fatal fires start between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., while families are asleep.

Smoke alarms might mean the difference between life and death.  Nine out of 10 fire victims die from smoke and toxic gases before the fire department can get there.

Smoke detectors in every home can change that trend.

“If you need a working smoke detector, we will bring and install a working smoke detector to your home,” says Macon-Bibb fire chief, Marvin Riggins.  “And if it’s just a battery that needs to be replaced, we will change that battery for you.  So, any of the citizens of Macon and Bibb County, please give us a call.  If you don’t have a working smoke detector in your home, give us a call and we will get one out to you.”

For questions about your smoke detector or to get a new one, call the fire department at 751-9213, 781-0172 or 784-8416.
