MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency is marking National Emergency Management Awareness Month with events aimed at educating the community about emergency preparedness.

Spencer Hawkins, the county’s emergency management director, said the agency will host a weather radio giveaway August 28 at 11 a.m. at the Macon Mall. Radios will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Aug. 19, EMA will be recognized with a countywide proclamation during a meeting in the Macon-Bibb County Commission Chambers.

“Throughout the month, we are highlighting on our social media channels who is emergency management and what we do,” Hawkins said. “Right now, we are going through 18 days with 18 ESFs.”

The International Association of Emergency Managers launched National Emergency Management Awareness Month this year to promote the role of emergency managers in protecting communities. The campaign encourages agencies across the country to engage with leaders, organizations and the public to raise awareness about emergency preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation.

Hawkins said the local events are designed to give residents practical tools, like weather radios, and encourage them to learn more about how EMA responds during emergencies and disasters.
