Macon Bibb County Fire Department Recognizes Women Of Service

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Four women with the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department were honored Thursday for their service, including one firefighter who says women in the profession don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

The ceremony was held at the Macon-Bibb County Administration Building, where Judy Heath of the Georgia Federation of Business and Professional Women presented certificates honoring the firefighters for their service.

One of the honorees was Pvt. Alexis Herst, who said the recognition was meaningful, especially for women working in a traditionally male-dominated field.

“It feels good to be recognized as a firefighter,” Herst said. “I feel like a lot of women don’t get recognized for the job. You know, we feel like sometimes we can’t do it like the man can.”

Herst said the recognition also shows the trust placed in women serving as firefighters.

“It feels good for people to trust me,” she said.

The ceremony highlighted the important role women play in the fire service and celebrated their commitment to protecting local residents.
