MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Middle Georgia State University and Macon-Bibb County partnered for the 11th consecutive year to recognize Macon’s veterans.
The monument at Coleman Hill Park pays tribute to members of the 151st Machine Gun Battalion and the 42nd Infantry “Rainbow” Division of the Georgia Army National Guard during World War I. Among the soldiers who lost their lives from these divisions were 79 Macon residents–sacrifices Middle Georgia State University President Dr. Christopher Blake says will never be forgotten.
“I’m glad that at least one day a year we designate in honor of our veterans,” Dr. Blake said. “Those who have put themselves in the way of harm and risked their well-being for the good of the world, for the good of peace, and democracy and freedom. And today is the day where we extend our gratitude.”
Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller says the city will continue to honor these brave men, and all veterans year in and year out.
“Anytime you see a vet, you ought to recognize them and thank them, no matter if it was one day or 100 years,” Miller said.
Miller called Veterans Day a time to reflect and show unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms. He said many people in Macon-Bibb County are unaware of the sacrifices those who came before them from the area made in past wars. The best way to honor the legacies of these men and women, Miller says, is to help veterans in the area who are still here with us and in need of assistance.
“We see a lot of homeless vets,” Miller said. “Try to reach out to help them. Try to help them get the services they need. It’s not always financially. We continue to pray for them, help provide for them and direct them to the resources that we have in our community.”
