MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department recently welcomed 14 new firefighters during a ceremony at Central Georgia Technical College.

New hire John Holmes says he has learned many new skills in the training process.

“We go over book work and then we practice it,” he said. “It’s one thing to just do book work, and learn the book, but you have to be able to do it. And that’s what we did every day. It was really good training.”

Holmes says he’s been in Bibb County his whole life and wants to continue to serve. He has one piece of advice for aspiring firefighters.

“Work hard, be disciplined, and never stop trying to improve yourself,” he said.

Deputy Chief Ron Smith says all the new firefighters are hard working and dedicated to Bibb County.

They’re an amazing group of individuals,” he said. “They’ve all worked hard. They have learned team work, collaboration, how to face adversity, and to keep pushing on.”

Smith says the fire department is a family environment and that they’re teaching new firefighters how to be more connected with each other and the community.

We have to support each other, because we see things that most people don’t see,” he said. “Most people might see two to three tragedies, but in the fire service you could see up to several hundred, so we have to come together mentally as well.”

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department says it’s still hiring and is looking for dedicated and determined firefighters.
