MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s been a lot of severe weather lately across the country and right here in Macon.

So, to prepare for the future, the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) held its second severe weather radio distribution event at Macon City Hall on Thursday.

The line was out the door and stretched around the building as NOAA weather radios and pillow shaker/strobe lights were passed out to Macon residents.

Some of those residents in line said they missed the first event last month and were glad they had a second chance to grab one.

Spencer Hawkins, Director for the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency, says the radios allow residents to get emergency notifications quickly when impending weather or dangerous situations happen.

“Now is the time to be prepared,” he said. “We’ve had some severe weather coming in over the last couple of weeks and so it’s really important you take the time to prepare. Have a weather alert radio, sign up for MBC Alert, which is our emergency notification system. You can download our MBC Alert app on your smartphone, make sure you build your emergency disaster kit and write an emergency plan and stay informed about what we’re doing.”

“Turns out people love weather radios, and we’re here for it, and so we’re going to give out as many radios as we can today,” he added.

Acording to the EMA, at the previous event, held in March, a total of 870 weather radios and 160 pillow shakers were given out to the community.
