MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new website allowing Georgia voters to cancel their registration online is now active. Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections Supervisor Thomas Gillon says members of the board attended a seminar to learn more about the website earlier this week.

“It’s designed so that if a voter moves out of state they cancel their voter registration here in Georgia,” Gillon said. “If they just want to cancel their voter registration no matter where they live, they can do that, or if a family member has passed away it’s an easy way to send that information in.”

The Georgia Secretary of State’s office said it identified and corrected a cybersecurity flaw allowing people to cancel others’ voter registrations with basic information. The site had initially disclosed personal information of voters, and many voting rights activists still feel as though there’s a possibility of wrongdoers attempting to remove legitimate voters. Macon-Bibb County board of Elections supervisor Thomas Gillon says the board is working to ease these concerns.

“And even if it does match everything, the registrar will send out a letter to the Georgia address that we have for the voter,” Gillon said. “It’s saying this request is processed, we just want to make sure you’re aware of it and that it was done by you.”

The deadline to register vote in Georgia is Monday, October 7. To register to vote or check your registration status, click here.
