The Macon Bacon held their annual Strikeout Cancer Night on Thursday; Bacon organization speaks on what cancer means to them

MACON, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Macon Bacon held their annual Strike Out Cancer night on Thursday at Luther Williams Field. Bacon players wore the ‘Strike Out Cancer; jerseys with the phrase on the back of their jersey, in place of their names, in solidarity of the cause to battle cancer.
Fans, coaches, and players from both teams alike all joined together in the fifth inning to hold up signs to display to everyone who they fight this disease for. Prior to the game, Bacon players, coaches, and staff members sat down with Bacon intern Allie Campbell one-on-one to talk about how cancer has impacted them and why this cause means so much to the organization.
Bacon President Brandon Raphael spoke about how both his parents have had cancer. His mother passed away from complications of lung cancer and a few years later, his father developed and beat colon cancer. “While we are doing this on one day, everyday is cancer awareness day” Raphael said. “I’m hopeful its just the one person that decides to go get checked, or that one person that decided ‘I want to support somebody else’. That’s what it’s about. To stand out there in front of 2500-3000 fans to talk about it, its hard, but it means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to a lot of people.”
