Local Red Cross Volunteers Prepared to Deploy to Oklahoma to Help with Relief Efforts
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Search and rescue efforts continue Tuesday in Oklahoma after what has been confirmed as an EF5 tornado ripped through parts of the state.
Volunteers from across the nation are coming together to help victims and first responders. Some in Middle Georgia are even stepping in to help Oklahomans get back on their feet.
The local red chapter of the American Red Cross reached out to its disaster relief volunteers to find out who is available to deploy. The national organization is looking for nurse and mental health therapist volunteers. The Central Georgia chapter also has its Emergency Response Vehicle on standby.
Tracy Kight, the executive director of the American Red Cross of Central Georgia, says this is a major disaster and they will provide local relief efforts for as long as it takes.
“We’re not just going to go in and pull out. You might see a team of local volunteers deploy immediately, you might see a team deploy in two weeks or two months,” Kight said. “We’re going to stay in Moore, Oklahoma until every single individual is back on their feet.”
The local team of volunteers could deploy any day this week. They will be gone for at least ten days to help with relief efforts.
If you can’t get to Oklahoma, you can help from right where you are. Kroger stores throughout the Peach State are holding a week long fundraiser. Shoppers are encouraged to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar. The money raised will go to the American Red Cross to help with first aid, meals, and other necessities. The “Round-Up” fundraiser starts Tuesday and goes through Sunday, May 26.
