Local Muslim Leader Weighs In on Controversial Anti-Islam Video

CENTERVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Some say the violent anti-American protests in the Mideast started with an anti-Muslim film mocking the Prophet Mohammed; others say that’s just an excuse to commit an act of terror on the anniversary of 9/11, in which 4 Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, were killed.

“We cannot condone that at all,” proclaims Imam Adam Fofana, leader of the Islamic Center of Middle Georgia.

Fofana says it makes him sad to see his religion misrepresented on both sides of the debate. “Regardless of what the movie is about, if there is something you disagree with, you have to act rationally,” he says.

The film, Innocence of Muslims, has lit a firestorm of anti-American protests around the Middle East for mocking Mohammed and Muslim beliefs; but Fofana, a devout Muslim who came to Middle Georgia from West Africa just 6 years ago, wears his American flag-spangled tie proudly, because he says people need to know the Muslims shown on the evening news burning the flag are missing the point of Islamic teachings.

“Even Prophet himself, if he were here today to see what they are doing, he would tell everybody that this doesn’t represent his religion and doesn’t represent him,” Fofana told 41NBC. The film, Fofana says, does not promote love. He believes Islam, like all religions, are about love…it’s their followers that forget that message.
