Local Humane Society Needs New Ventilation System, Can’t Afford It
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – When you have a whole lot of cats in one place, it might cause a bit of a smell at times, no matter how hard you try to stop it.
The renters of the space next to Macon Purrs N Paws in the Fall Line Plaza filed a complaint about the smell with the property manager last week.
Now, the shelter must fix the problem or be forced out of its south Macon home.
“The problem is this facility is for retail shopping,” says Anne Brennaman, founder of Macon Purrs N Paws. “It’s going to take between $6,000 and $10,000 for us to put in the proper kind of ventilation that we need.”
For a non-profit organization like this one, raising that kind of money isn’t easy.
“There is no profit,” says Brennaman. “By the end of the month, it’s scrimp, scrimp, and what kind of fundraiser are we having next?”
Brennaman says Fall Line Plaza, where the shelter is located, is in foreclosure and the property is currently being held by Certus Bank. The bank wants the problematic smell fixed or the shelter out in 90 days.
“If we make that kind of improvement on a leased space, if we ever leave, it stays,” says Brennaman. “So we can’t afford to do it. We certainly don’t have that kind of money.”
Brennaman says she’s looking for a stand-alone facility, particularly a building that may already have the restaurant-style ventilation system the shelter needs.
“My hope, my prayer, my wish, whatever–all of us–is that we can get a foreclosed property and that someone will donate it because it is a tax write-off.”
If Macon Purrs N Paws comes up empty-handed, Brennaman says the state could have the cats put down.
“I’m begging the community to please come together and help us save these animals. We don’t want to see them die.”
Brennaman wants to be clear she has no hard feelings toward RadioShack, the shelter’s current neighbor. She says the smell is a problem the shelter just needs to get fixed.
We tried reaching out to both RadioShack and Certus Bank, the bank who’s holding the property right now, but we haven’t heard anything back from either of them.
If you know of a property the shelter can use or if you want to help them out in some other way, give them a call at (478) 719-5808, visit their website, or check them out on Facebook.
