Local Conservative Citizens Protest at IRS Office
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A local group of conservatives protested in front of the downtown Macon IRS office on Tuesday as part of a national Tea Party movement to stand up against the IRS.
“C’mon Macon, these are your rights we’re fighting for too,” one protestor shouted.
Rights the group of conservative citizens believe the IRS violated.
“I think it’s the overstepping bounds of a government, using the government to bully its people,” Marc Cloutier with the Macon-Bibb County Tea Party group said.
Cloutier joined dozens of concerned citizens to protest what they call the IRS’ complete abuse of power. Tuesday’s protest in front was one of hundreds of protests across the country held at local IRS offices at noon.
“Wwe really cannot tolerate the IRS being used as a political arm to clout one organization or another,” protester Keith McCracken said.
Protesters say your political party doesn’t matter. The IRS is a non-partisan, non-bias government entity and it should treat everyone the same.
“If one organization is excluded or singled out it becomes bullying, it becomes national bullying, bullying those who oppose your message,” Cloutier said.
They believe the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups is a political move and they won’t tolerate what they call intimidation tactics.
“What I’ve seen lately is totally out of our mainstream, totally out of what we need in the country,” McCracken said. “We need honesty in government in this country.”
They say if our nation’s leaders don’t act now, our future could be very grim.
“America be careful. If we let this go, your freedoms, my freedoms are under attack and you and I can’t stop something that big,” Cloutier said.
Protesters hope they brought attention to this national problem. They are calling for a reduction of power in the IRS or to shut it down completely.
