Trend: Local artists say display of public art is bringing Macon to life

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A noticeable change in Macon, public art by local artists displayed around town is becoming more and more of a common sight. Now, local art enthusiasts say the rising trend represents an awakening in Macon.

“The art is a natural progression to show that the city is coming back to life you know,” said Kathy Nolan.

The Macon Arts Alliance and affiliated local artists have been busy this year.

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a big growth spike in downtown Macon with the arts community,” said local artist Colin Penndorf.

They’re busy making sure streets, side walks, parks and any other open spaces they can get their paint on are sending a message.

“It’s kind of been a ‘Renaissance’ of downtown with all the new activity and the new businesses opening up,” said Nolan. “We’ve currently got a new project that’s gonna be happening with the Macon Transit Authority. We have also worked recently on a mural project connecting East Macon to (downtown) Macon,” she continued.

The East to West Art Walk,  the stag statue on Mulberry Street, Dannenburg building murals, ‘Macon’ bike racks, MTA bus station mural and you can’t forget downtown’s painted pianos are just a few of many recent projects by local artists.

“Looking at downtown now compared to looking at downtown 12 years ago you can see that not only is the art coming back, but you can see that the community is sort of encouraging that,” said Penndorf.

As of today, there are a little more than 30 public art projects displayed around town. Penndorf says growing up here, he’s seen the progress the city has made.

“The community itself is starting to notice the importance of having public art that’s not just gallery based–but something that people can interact with day to day,” he said.

With several projects currently being worked on and more new art ventures ahead, what you see now is only the beginning. For more information on art projects around town head to this website.
