MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- The Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department is celebrating what would have been Little Richard’s 93rd birthday Friday with a special community event at the Little Richard House and Resource Center on Craft Street.

The drop-in celebration runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and includes guided tours, cake, and an indoor showing of the documentary “Rock & Relocate: The Story of Little Richard’s Childhood Home.” The film highlights the move of the home from 5th Street to Craft Street nearly a decade ago and is narrated by members of the Pleasant Hill community.

Recreation Programmer Christopher Austin says the day is all about honoring Little Richard’s influence and preserving the story of his childhood home.

“Today is Little Richard’s 93rd birthday, so what we want to do is we want to have a celebration,” Austin said. “We wanna highlight just his musical journey, the career. If you understand the Little Richard House, you know how important it is to the Pleasant Hill community. So we just want to have a celebration in honor of Little Richard today.”

Inside the house, visitors will find exhibits, memorabilia, signed items and original pieces connected to the music icon. Staff will meet guests at the door and lead them through the home during guided tours.

The event was originally expected to include live music and an outdoor documentary screening, but those plans were moved indoors because of anticipated rain. The outdoor portion will be rescheduled for a later date.

The celebration is free and open to the public. Those who can’t attend can visit the Little Richard House and Resource Center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The house is located at 416 Craft Street.
