Suspected arsonist caught on video setting Lawrenceville home on fire

Authorities are searching for a suspected arsonist after video appeared to capture a person setting fire to a Lawrenceville, Georgia, home while six people were inside.

(NBC)- Authorities are searching for a suspected arsonist after video appeared to capture a person setting fire to a Lawrenceville, Georgia, home while six people were inside.

Ring camera video obtained by WXIA appears to show a person with their face covered dragging a burning object toward the home. The individual briefly drops the object before throwing it into the garage.

Moments later, the video appears to show the person swinging another object toward the garage before leaving the area.

The home was soon engulfed in flames.

Authorities say the fire was intentionally set and are asking the public for help identifying the person responsible.

Christopher Hammond said he and five roommates were inside the home when the fire broke out early Wednesday morning. Some were asleep, but Hammond happened to still be awake.

“I started yelling. Guys, for the people upstairs, I started yelling their names,” Hammond said.

Firefighters arrived shortly before 5:30 a.m. The home partially collapsed, but authorities reported no injuries.

Another resident, Dakota Perry, said he ran outside and saw flames coming from the garage.

Residents said seeing the surveillance video changed their understanding of what happened.

“It wasn’t just a random fire,” Hammond said.

No arrests have been made. Police say the incident remains under investigation.
