Laurens County Homes Damaged By Storm
DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A possible tornado raged through Dublin this morning, causing a large amount of damage to multiple locations in the northern part of town.
Horace Dixon assumed everything was alright when the storm hit.
“I felt pretty good,” said Dixon.
He didn’t hear the sirens go off in Dublin.
“We have a warning system here and it didn’t come on,” said Dixon.
His initial bad news came from, of all places, a couple of states away.
“I got a call from my landlord who lives in North Carolina. He says Horace, says, there’s something on Facebook that says the storm hit in Dublin,” said Dixon.
And it certainly did.
Dixon came back to his house with his wife, and found this.
“I was surprised. I really was. I thank the Lord it was as well as it was,” said Dixon.
The storm hit the Trinity area in north Dublin just after 8 a.m., and strong winds blew numerous trees down, knocking down power lines and damaging houses.
Dixon says he was lucky big limbs like this one didn’t hit his house.
It came very close.
And now, it’s time for the community here in north Dublin to start the clean up.
“We’re now trying to do a damage assessment,” said County Administrator Bryan Rogers.
County Administrator Bryan Rogers says help is on the way.
“We will visit every structure in that area with our damage assessment teams, seeing what had taken place–seeing how much damage has occurred,” said Rogers.
But getting power back may take awhile.
“The power crews–it’s not going to be a quick fix for them,” said Rogers.
Long hours are ahead.
“There’s powerlines down everywhere, so they’ll probably be going on into the evening and into the night trying to get some of these powerlines back up and get power restored,” said Rogers.
Until then, Dixon knows what’s really important–the safety of his family.
“When I came home and saw the devastation, I just thanked the Lord that she was alright. All these material things is not worth it you know,” said Dixon.
Rogers also advised everyone to pay attention to emergency officials in the area, and don’t go near downed power lines.
The National Weather Service will offically declare whether or not there was a tornado tomorrow morning.
