Last Day to File Taxes On Time

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The clock is ticking on the deadline to file your taxes. Monday is the last day to turn in all your paperwork on time without facing any penalties.

“I’ll just be glad to get it over with,” last minute taxpayer David Cochran said.

April 15th at midnight is the IRS deadline to file your taxes on time.

“Everybody is pushing to finally get their taxes done. All the procrastinators out there, they’re coming in now,” Steve Tyler with Liberty Tax Services said.

Tyler says most of their customers file early, but there has been a steady flow of last minute filers coming into the Macon office on Monday. His biggest advice for taxpayers is to get your taxes in even if you don’t have all your paperwork together.

“Don’t sit there at home going, ‘I don’t have all my paperwork ready, I don’t have my paperwork ready.’ Bring what you have, bring it in, let us get it done for you because then you avoid the failure to file penalty.”

Tyler says you can get an extension which means you have until October 15th to file your taxes. You will still have to pay most of your income tax due by Monday. If you already filed your taxes, “As long as they go ahead and file their return and they owe, they can call, they can set up, they can go online and get a payment plan with the IRS.”

According to the IRS, as of April 4th, almost 97 million people filed their taxes early and the average refund was $2,755.

“Habit, don’t like the rush. Want to make sure its taken care of so the best way is to do it earlier,” early taxpayer Vermell Leslie said.

And others are waiting until the last minute.

“Just finally got it all together. There were things we had to find, put it all together,” Cochran said.

The clock is ticking and time is almost up on tax day 2013. Tyler says Liberty Tax Services will be open late Monday night to help any last minute filers.
