Lane Southern Orchards ready for holiday season

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Pecans are famous in Georgia, in fact Georgia Pecan Industry produces more than 250 million dollars every year.

One Middle Georgia pecan orchard is preparing for Thanksgiving rush.

Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley is nearly a hundred years old. It is located on Georgia Highway 96.

In addition to pecans, they grow peaches and berries.

There is a retail store, which includes a gift shop that sells a variety of pecans, peaches, strawberries and blackberries products. They include jams, wine, fudge, chocolate covered pecans, etc.

Customers can dine at the Peachtree Cafe, on various entrees, desserts and even peach tea.

“We’re right here at three weeks from thanksgiving this is the biggest time of year when pecans are in demand,” says Lane.

They use machines to shake pecan trees, causing the nuts to fall to the ground.

I watched as workers made candy coated pecans and fresh cinnamon pecan bread. These items have become very popular during the holidays.

Lane says they usually have to work harder to keep up with the pecan demand during Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“We bring in extra people to help in the process of getting the nuts out and getting them to different people.”

Lane Southern Orchards ship pecans all across the United States and is selling their products worldwide, in places like India, China, Brazil and Dubai.
