MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –  Families and friends from across Middle Georgia came together Friday to celebrate the Fourth of July at the 28th Annual ‘Sparks Over the Park’ event at Lake Tobesofkee.

Despite the heat, hundreds of people gathered at the lake, where the air was filled with music and the smells of grills.

Aside from the food, families enjoyed swimming and boating. One family we spoke with was not only celebrating our nation’s independence but also a family reunion.

“It’s about getting family together,” one family member said. “If you think about this, this was all put together in the middle of yesterday, you know? A text went out saying, ‘Hey, I want to hang out, and about 30 or 40 of us got together. It’s all about family bonding and reminiscing about what we used to do, making it happen today.”

The festivities feature live music by the Plum Tucker Band, starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9:15.

The park will close at 10 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, while kids under 6 and under get in for free.
