Higher costs and heavy traffic expected for Labor Day travel

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As summer winds down, many Americans are planning one last getaway for Labor Day weekend. However, travelers should brace themselves for higher prices and packed highways.

According to AAA, travel costs are up across the board this year. Domestic flights now average around $750 for a roundtrip ticket, a 2% increase from last year. For those flying to popular destinations, the price tag jumps even higher nearing $790, which represents a 20% spike.

It’s not just airfare that’s taking a bigger bite out of travelers’ wallets. Hotel bookings have also surged, with domestic rates up 9% and international rates up 12% compared to last year. Add to that the rising cost of gas, with the national average for regular gasoline at $3.19 a gallon.

For those hitting the road, prepare for heavy traffic, especially on Thursday and Friday when vacationers and commuters overlap. Cities like Atlanta are expected to see especially large crowds this Labor Day, so travelers should plan accordingly and pack their patience for the journey.
