Kemp Rules in Bibb County’s Favor, Throws Out 2009 Land Survey
In a news conference this morning, Secretary of State Brian Kemp rules in Bibb County’s favor in long standing border war between Monroe County.
Millions of dollars in tax revenue were at stake in this long standing dispute. According to a land survey done in 2009 by Terry Scarborough, the Monroe County line should be farther south. Bibb County officials claim the survey was done incorrectly.
Kemp says he felt uncomfortable using Scarborough’s survey because there wasn’t enough evidence supporting it. When asked if the amount of money Bibb County would lose was a factor Kemp replied, “No.”
Kemp says, “I did not feel comfortable setting a county line that I didn’t know 100% in my mind was the right location.
According to Monroe County Commissioner Larry Evans this dispute is far from over. He says commissioners will get together soon and plan to file an appeal. Evans says he is shocked by the decision. Evans believes Monroe County had more than substantial amount of evidence.
“Certainly from a political stand point there are many more voters in Bibb County than·there are in Monroe County and that may have had a bearing on it,” says Evans.
