Jury Finds John Williams Guilty on 3 Counts
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A federal jury has found former Warner Robins City Councilman John Williams guilty on all three counts: extortion, witness tampering, and making false statements.
The jury listened to closing arguments from both attorneys’. The U.S Attorney’s office argued Williams got paid from the sale of a vehicle to the Warner Robins Police Department while he was a member of council. After more than 4 hours of deliberations, they alerted the judge that they had made a decision.
” Public corruption cases are a priority for us. I think that the public has a right to feel confident in the people they elect to lead them and those people hold a special place of trust. When that trust gets violated and abused, there are ramifications to pay and we want to make sure my offices are committed to making sure those people face what the law holds for them… If they choose to make those decisions.”
Williams was released today until sentencing, which has not been scheduled. He could face a sentence of more than 40 years in prison and more than $750,000 in fines.
