Jury Deliberating John Williams Case

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – This morning, attorneys on both sides wrapped up their closing arguments in the John Williams’ federal trial.  Williams is a former Warner Robins City Councilman.

Williams’ attorney, Christina Hunt, told jurors that what Williams is accused of may have been unethical, but it isn’t criminal.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul McCommon said that the evidence clearly showed Williams engaged in criminal behavior.

Williams is charged with extortion, making false statements, and witness tampering.  The U.S Attorney’s office argued Williams got paid from the sale of a vehicle to the Warner Robins Police Department while he was a member of council.

If convicted, he could face a sentence of more than 40 years in prison and more than $750,000 in fines.
