Juliette, Georgia: A Small Town with a Big Romantic Tradition
Monroe County town partners with Romeo, Michigan, to create a unique Valentine’s Day tradition that sends love letters around the world.

JULIETTE, Georgia (CNN/WXIA)- There is something poetic about Juliette, Georgia—a small town in Monroe County where charm and Southern hospitality are written on the faces of everyone you meet. Whether you’re a local or a first-time visitor, Juliette welcomes thousands each year, drawing people from every state and country.
But not everyone who experiences Juliette does so in person. Many find their way to the town through a tradition that brings romance to mailboxes across the world.
A Love Letter Tradition
One of Juliette’s most famous attractions isn’t a historic site—it’s the town’s tiny post office. Each February, the post office becomes the heart of a worldwide love story, stamping thousands of Valentine’s Day letters with a special postmark.
“We get stamps from different people all over the country and all over the world, and they’ll actually address them to us,” said a Juliette postal worker.
The postmark, designed specifically for Valentine’s Day, adds a sentimental touch to love letters.
“There’s nothing like it. It’s very special, very sweet,” the worker said.
A Tale of Two Towns: Romeo and Juliette
Juliette’s Valentine’s Day tradition began in 1997 after a message from an unexpected place—Romeo, Michigan.
The postmaster in Romeo had started a special postmarking tradition in 1994. Three years later, he reached out to Juliette, Georgia, to propose a partnership that would pair their towns in a unique, romantic way.
Despite initial uncertainty, the town embraced the idea, and the tradition took off. Each year, Romeo, Michigan, and Juliette, Georgia, release matching postmarks, celebrating love in a way only they can.
“My postmark will say Romeo, Michigan. Juliette, Georgia, will say Juliette, Georgia. And we’re doing that now for the 25th year,” Romeo, Michigan Postmaster Alex Stubbs, III said.
A Town Worth Writing Home About
