Josie’s Girls Share Secret Behind New Potatoes

MONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Josie’s Restaurant has been serving Middle Georgians for more than three decades. It all started because of one woman’s dream.

Cynthia Williams, Sharon Oglesby, and Brenda Dean are sisters now running the family business. The restaurant is named for their mother, who they say always loved to cook.

Cynthia said, “This is her dream and we’re just keeping it going…there were ten of us and she did a lot of cooking.”

“I love getting to be with my sisters all day, I love cooking, this is what I’ve been doing all my life and I just enjoy it,” said Sharon.

The sisters cook together and created their own version of new potatoes. The recipe calls for sliced red potatoes. Sharon puts the sliced potatoes in water, adds a pinch of salt and brings everything to a boil until the slices are tender. After draining the potatoes, she reserves some of the water to use for later. She tops the dish off with chives, a dash of chili powder and a touch of melted margarine.

Even faithful customer Jack Maffett, has a hard time putting the taste into words. “I just know it’s good, everything is good,” said Maffett.

Monday through Friday customers can order just about anything they want. It’s where three sisters are keeping the tradition of a hearty meal alive and well.

Josie’s is located 113 South Dooly Street in Montezuma.
