Jones County Sheriff’s Office looking to identify body found near the Ocmulgee River

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Jones County Sheriff’s investigators say they have an idea of the identity of the man found dead under a bridge near the Ocmulgee River on Thursday. However, they are not releasing his name.

The man was discovered by a couple fishing on the river. His body was found under a bridge on Georgia Highway 18 West about 20 feet above the bank of the river, according to Jones County Sheriff’s Major Earl Humphries.

“Right now we have made a preliminary identification of the deceased man, that we found under the bridge,” says Humphries. “We have taken some DNA samples for a positive identification and that should take a few weeks to positively identify the deceased.”

He adds there were no signs of any injuries or trauma and no obvious cause of death.

“Right now it appears to be natural cause of death,” he tells 41NBC.

The unidentified man does not fit the description of a missing person in Jones County.
