Jones County Fire and Rescue Simulate Consequences of Drinking and Driving

GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — For about half a dozen years, Jones County Fire and Rescue have made it their mission to teach kids the dangers of drinking and getting behind the wheel with an extra emphasis on prom night.

As the seniors at Jones County High School gear up for a night to remember, they’re also being taught an important lesson. Wednesday, the Jones County Fire and Rescue team re-enacted what could happen if students aren’t careful during prom.

“They put out the call over the scanners for the fire department and the police, they bring in the patrol cars just like it’s a real accident,” said Drama Teacher Casey Wright.

The class of 2013 gathered outside near the track to watch a reproduction of a nightmare.

Senior Class President Sydney Jordan said, “They bring in the hearse, the ambulance, and the rescue…they talk to you just like you were in a wreck.”

The scenario includes a 3 car crash, the actors are students in drama class and volunteers in the community.

“I think the whole student body will be impacted by this,” said Jordan.

A local volunteer, Zack Evanson said “It did seem real because of all the fire trucks and people carrying people on stretchers and the hearse coming in and body bags…it was realistic.”

It’s a reality that Jones County Fire Captain Keith Hollingsworth hopes these students will never have to be a part of.

“These kids are the future and we want them to be safe so we try to make it as real and as potent as we possibly can,” said Captain Hollingsworth.

Prom for Jones County High School is Friday, April 12.
