Jones Commission Approves District Lines

Today, the Jones County Board of Commissioners held a meeting to approve district changes and maps.

The 2010 Census showed an increase in the county’s population, creating an imbalance in the representation by each district. Both the Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education worked together to redraw the lines.

Jones County Chairman Preston Hawkins says it took two lengthy meetings  but overall it went smoothly.

“We’re just happy because a lot of counties aren’t in agreement. Some of the commissioners are fighting among themselves, some of the board members are fighting among themselves, but in our county I’m pleased to say everybody was in harmony with it.”

According to Hawkins, the population increased 26% from 2000 to 2010.
The Board of Commissioners anticipates the redistricting to be completed by the end of the week.
