Join the ‘Flight Club’ at The Museum of Aviation

WARNER ROBINS (41NBC/WMGT) – If you’re in the mood for some high flying action that gets you in the pilot’s seat, check out the Flight Club at the Museum of Aviation on Robins Air Force Base.

Wayne Carley is the lead flight instructor who basically rewrote the software for a flight simulator that is unlike anything else in the nation. Carley’s program allows you to get in rebuilt cockpits of several different types of fighter planes and learn to fly them, without ever leaving the ground.

What makes this program even more unique, is that Carley has set it up so everyone flying in one of the eight different simulators can fly together at the same time. Communication between the cockpits is like what it would be if you were flying an actual mission at 40,000 feet. Carley can set up missions that would be simulate missions overseas an actual group of pilots would engage in while fighting in war. The graphics on the software allow extremely realistic looking aerials of the earth which are from Google Earth.

But Carley’s graphics are on steroids. He can put you anywhere in the world, anywhere on the ocean on any aircraft carrier, and put you in any situation a fighter pilot might encounter. He can even create emergency situations on your plane to take place.

But why create all this? Besides being an incredibly realistic opportunity to experience something most people never would, Carley’s main mission with Flight Club is to teach people the fundamentals of communication, teamwork, and even risk assessment. His plan to use this as a resource for companies to teach its employees valuable lessons to increase productivity.

“Decision making, communications is always a popular topic that needs to be improved on in any company,” Carley explained. “There’s so many different applications. From a team building perspective, that can be built on this scenario. So you end up with a very practical application that improves productivity in the business setting, while at the same time being a very recreational and very fun activity when it comes to flying, since most people will never really get a chance to become a pilot.”
