John R. Lewis Elementary School hosts first Black History Fashion Show
The entire school was in attendance as all grade levels, Pre-K through 5th Grade, participated in the show, which featured historical figures old and new.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – John R. Lewis Elementary School in Macon celebrated Black History Month Friday by hosting its first Black History Fashion Show.
The entire school was in attendance as all grade levels, Pre-K through 5th Grade, participated in the show, which featured historical figures old and new.
Diandra Walker, Media Specialist for John R. Lewis Elementary School, along with other members of the newly-formed Black History Fashion Show Committee, have been planning this since December.
“I developed a committee of people, my counselors,” said Walker. “The STEM teacher and one of our ERP teachers, and we worked together to make it happen.”

Walker says this is something new for the students while also being a good learning opportunity.
“We wanted to do something different,” said Walker. “We’ve noticed over the years that when students dress up and come into the school to do the Wax Museum, they typically dress up as the same person every year, so this year, we wanted to do a fashion show to showcase some newness and show them some little known Black History historical figures as well.”
Walker says she and the rest of the committee felt great about the show and are planning to do it again next year.
