Jewish Community Rings in the New Year

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Jewish people around the world, and here in middle Georgia celebrate a new year today!

Rosh Hashanah is a special holiday to the Jewish community, and is observed as a time for personal reflection for many Jews. 

Temple Beth Israel leader, Rabbi Larry Schlesinger, says the 10-day period ends on Yom Kippur, or the day of atonement. 

Throughout the holiday Jews look back at past behaviors, decisions and how they treat others. Going forward, they hope for a better future. 

“Our job at this time is to really look inward and to search our souls and to see what we’re doing right, which is great, but also see what we’re doing wrong-to be really honest with ourselves,” says Rabbi Schlesinger. 

Rabbi Schlesinger says he hopes everyone in the Jewish community has a happy, healthy new year.
