Iran’s president described the confrontation as a military victory for Iran, while the United States said it responded with strikes.

The escalation comes as delicate negotiations aimed at ending the war continue behind the scenes.

Trump administration officials say a framework agreement could potentially be reached as early as this week.

A U.S. official told NBC News the proposed framework would extend the ceasefire by 60 days, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and begin negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

Still, major questions remain unresolved.

Vice President JD Vance told NBC News he is “extremely hopeful” a deal can be reached that would include Iran agreeing not to develop a nuclear weapon.

However, Vance acknowledged the larger concern is whether Iran could be trusted to uphold any future agreement.

The proposed deal is also facing resistance from members of the Israeli government, who fear it would not sufficiently limit Iran’s missile capabilities or its support for militias throughout the Middle East.

An Iranian official said the agreement would also end fighting in Lebanon.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he plans to intensify Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah, arguing that a separate U.S.-backed ceasefire in Lebanon is not being respected by either side.
