Investigators wait for baby found in Macon trash can autopsy results

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The autopsy for a baby that was found in a trash can at a Macon home is scheduled for tomorrow.

“If a baby’s been dead since 11 o’clock this morning, someone should have called the sheriff’s office this morning,” said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones as he worked the scene of the Napier Avenue home Wednesday evening.

Deputies responded to a call from the Coliseum Hospital where they found 30-year-old Latoya Ivory. Jones said Ivory gave birth before 11 a.m. Wednesday.

“A [fully] developed little girl, but it’s a premature baby. The baby is dead,” said Jones.

The baby wasn’t with Ivory when she went to the hospital. Bibb deputies found the baby in a trash can at the Napier Avenue home.

“The hospital said about 18 weeks. [She was] right around 18 weeks pregnant,” explained Col. Aubrey Evins with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators questioned Ivory about the death. No charges have been filed at this time. The next step in the investigation is to review the autopsy results.

“To determine the condition of the fetus when it was delivered and then we will go from there,” said Evins.

Jones said Ivory knew she was pregnant and the sheriff’s office should have been notified earlier that the baby was missing when she arrived at the hospital.

“When the young lady got to the hospital and said she had delivered a baby, said her water had broke, and the baby was at here or anywhere, the sheriff’s office should have been notified right then and there,” said Jones.

Investigators say the autopsy is scheduled for Friday around 8 a.m. They may bring Ivory in for questioning again once they receive the autopsy results.
