Inmate found dead at Bibb County jail, investigation underway

According to the sheriff’s office, corrections deputies found the inmate unresponsive in his cell just before 2:30 a.m.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an inmate at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center early Wednesday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, corrections deputies found the inmate unresponsive in his cell just before 2:30 a.m. Conditions in the cell indicated that the inmate had hanged himself.

Deputies performed life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived. The inmate was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by hospital staff.

An autopsy will be conducted because the case is considered an in-custody death. The sheriff’s office said the investigation is being handled by its Internal Affairs Division within the Office of Professional Standards.

According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, the inmate has been identified as 50-year-old Christopher Henderson.

Henderson was being held in the Bibb County jail for charges of four counts of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct. The GBI has been notified and will be assisting in the investigation.
