Inmate found dead at Bibb County Jail, investigation underway

The inmate’s name and offense information will be released once next of kin have been notified.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – An inmate was found dead at the Bibb County Jail early Wednesday morning, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. 

The inmate has been identified as 62-year-old George Oliver Crafter.

Corrections deputies discovered the inmate unresponsive just before 6 a.m., and Emergency Medical Services responded and pronounced the inmate dead at the scene, according to a news release. 

Crafter was being held in the Bibb County Jail for Upson County Sheriff’s Office. According to Upson County Sheriff’s Office the next of kin has been notified.

The sheriff’s office said the inmate had an extensive medical history. An autopsy will be conducted, as is standard procedure for in-custody deaths. The incident is being investigated by internal affairs investigators from the Office of Professional Standards.
