Inmate dead at Telfair State Prison, investigation underway

According to the press release, the death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards, as standard procedure.

TELFAIR COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man died on Thursday at Telfair State Prison in McRae-Helena, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

The inmate, Aaron Smith, died on December 19. Smith was serving 20 years for armed robbery out of Richmond County with a maximum release date of February 2031.

The body was turned over to the county coroner and will be transported to the GBI crime lab to determine the official cause of death.

According to the press release, the death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards, as standard procedure.
