Independence Day celebration kicked off Friday at Lake Tobesofkee

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – People are getting an early start celebrating the Independence Day weekend at Lake Tobesofekee. Boating, swimming, and playing were a few of the ways they were having fun.

“I grilled mostly hot dogs and hamburgers,” says Troy Lawrence of Macon.

Lawrence manned the grill for his family reunion at the lake Friday. He says it was the perfect spot for their annual event.

“Just to be able to get away it’s not far,” continues Lawrence. “You don’t have to go to Atlanta, you don’t have to go to Savannah, Tybee. You got the lake here not a lot of traffic to get here.”

The adults watched as the children played on the beach.

“When we first got here there was a no alcohol on the premises and I think that was kind of good, for everybody to be out here enjoying themselves,” adds Kim Jones of Savannah. “Sometimes when you have alcohol, it kind of gets in the way of having fun.”

Shariefka Hillman’s family was on the other side of the lake. Because, she has to work on the Fourth of July, her family celebrated a day early.

“I’m happy to be out here with them today, just enjoying the beach with my niece, nephew and my little brother. We’re enjoying the holiday,” says Hillman.

Her brother, Jerame Gotell, was the grill master. Gotell loaded chicken, hamburgers and corn on the grill.
He tells 41NBC, for him, being with his family was the highlight of the day.

“Watching my kids have fun in the water, cause they are learning how to swim and they are enjoying every moment of it,” laughs Gotell.

Others danced the night away at nearby Fish and Pig restaurant. Tracy Davis was among some of the people who hit the dance floor and enjoyed live music.

“A good dinner with our friends from North Carolina, family from Byron and Lizzella,” explains Davis.

Lake Tobesofkee will be open all weekend. Park officials say their will be numerous lifeguards on duty.
