How Middle Georgia families can prepare for Hurricane Isaias
The Red Cross recommends preparing emergency supplies, securing important documents, planning for pets and monitoring weather alerts.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — With Hurricane Isaias expected to bring heavy rain, possible flooding and tornado threats to Middle Georgia this weekend, the American Red Cross is urging families to prepare before the storm arrives.
“A lot of people may think this is a gulf coast storm: “We’re going to get a little bit of rain”; I’ve heard people say that,” Suzanne Lawler with the American Red Cross said. “But we do face tornado threats; we face a risk of a lot of rain. So knowing your risk and how to prepare that is your best insurance policy to keep you and your family safe.”
Lawler is sharing tips on emergency safety kits and how families can prepare before the storms hit.
“Pets are a part of the family, right, but they can get away from us,” she said. “You definitely want a photo of your pet in case you get separated from them. Grab a 3×5 card, put the most important people in your life on it. In case your cell phone dies or you can’t use it, you have their numbers,” said Lawler.
“Get a weather radio,” she said. “In case you lose power or you don’t have batteries, you can have access to a weather radio, but don’t forget the extra batteries. Put your important papers into a binder. So you have your health information, medical information, homeowners’ insurance and your pet vaccinations.”
Lawler also says to be cautious around moving water. She says six inches of moving water can knock a person down, and 12 inches can move a car.
The American Red Cross also encourages residents to download its free weather app to receive emergency alerts and stay informed when severe weather threatens Middle Georgia.
