Hundreds Turn Out for Boston Marathon Tribute Run in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A week after two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon, people from all over the United States and middle Georgia are finding ways to support the people affected.
“That was really hard to even get the messages that anything like that could happen,” says Sherry Castles. “Even at the Boston Marathon–not just to any of us and all of us in America, but even to the Boston Marathon.”
Monday night, Run Fit Sports in Macon hosted one of several tribute runs across the country, including two more at RFS’s McDonough and Warner Robins locations. Runners ran 10% of the total length of the Boston Marathon–that’s 2.62 miles.
“I thought that was a worthwhile thing to do just to show our support for the people of Boston,” says Edsel Davis. “That’s great.”
With a $20 donation, runners got a free ‘Runners for Boston’ t-shirt, with 100% of those proceeds going straight to the victims.
“Run Fit Sports is paying for the printing and the shirts themselves,” says Perry Slaughter, owner of Run Fit Sports. “Therefore, the entire $20 or whatver you want to give can go straight to help those victims in Boston.”
For these runners, it wasn’t hard to get out Monday night and pay tribute to the hundreds of lives that have been changed so much.
“My neighbor stopped me and asked me to come,” says Davis. “And I said, ‘Okay, that’s a good thing to do.”
“You just kind of feel connected to other people who just want to get out and feel good and do good and live a good life,” says Castles. “Like they say, the further you run, the smaller your problems are.”
