Hundreds of volunteers in Sandersville to re-enact Civil War battle

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – This weekend, Sandersville will shut down to back into the Civil War era. Hundreds of volunteers and spectators are expected to visit to take part in the first ever reenactment of the ‘Battle of Sandersville.’

It’s like taking a step into a time machine — no cell phones, no brand names, no cars of SUVs.

Well maybe a few.

Volunteers are getting to turn Sandersville into a battlefield.

“There was actually a skirmish here in Sandersville. It was one of the first places where Sherman met resistance,” Mel Daniel, a coordinator, said.

Daniel, or “Sgt. Daniel” for the weekend planned with his team for more than a year to put the reenactment together.

“When I say pyrotechnics you’ll actually see explosions coming up out of the ground, artillery pieces going off. The cavalry will be running back and forth across the field. It’ll be about an hour long battle,” Daniel said.

Mock federal and confederate soldiers will camp out on the outskirts of downtown, head into the city, and then march to battle.

“Once you get the uniform on and everybody comes into camp and you start living it and you start feeling it. It just kind of comes alive in you,” Stacey Williford, another coordinator, said.

Volunteers say authenticity is key.

People from the North and South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida will be in town to participate.

What takes your breath away is the attention to detail.

From the hard tack biscuits, to the old Southern flags….everything has been researched.

“A lot of people you talk to, they’re not as familiar with their history sometimes. They can come out and see these living historians portray these certain characters from that time period. They can learn a lot more than what they can from a history book,” Daniel said.

So whether you’re a Civil War buff or fell like you were born 150 years too late, volunteers say come out and be part of history.
