Railroad worker finds human skull in south Peach County
FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A railroad worker found a human skull around 3:30 p.m. in Peach County, Wednesday.
According to Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese, investigators have confirmed that there are human remains in the area.
Deputies have blocked off a football field sized area, three miles south of Fort Valley off Highway 49, to continue searching for remains.
“All we know at this point is they’ve been here awhile because they’re weathered and covered in pine straw. So we’re guessing about a year and a half, two years. When the bones get to the crime lab, they’ll be able to tell us more, hopefully,” Deese said.
About a dozen squad cars were on scene as investigators looked for clues. Deese adds it’s too early to even tell is the bones are male or female let alone identifying the remains.
The GBI is assisting in the investigation.
Officers found two screws as well, which means the person had major surgery on the right ankle and possibly walked with a severe limp.
Sheriff Deese expects to stay at the scene for at least another day Friday, before taking the evidence to the GBI Crime Lab.
